80 GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT 07.18 Q: If you could play guitar with one group (current or past), who would it be and why? A: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. My personal guitar hero. Q: What piece of equipment or device is your favorite? A: Walk mower. I love starting out the day walk mowing. It's good exercise and I love the stripes it puts down on the greens. Q: What is your dream vacation? A: Superbike racing school, anywhere, but preferably WeatherTech Raceway in Laguna Seca (near Salinas, Calif.) Q: What is your favorite word? A: "Today." I like to stay focused on what's right in front of me today, not worry about tomorrow or dwell on the past. Q: Is there a particular challenge caring for The Ranch Club? A: Voles. There's a million of them. They're everywhere, and they're lightning fast. Q: What is the best piece of advice you have received about this business? A: Don't try to cover up a mistake; admit it and figure out how to deal with it, or at least learn from it and don't repeat it. — Howard Richman, GCM associate editor Getting to know you Dave Walden is on his fourth career. It appears, though, there will be no going, going gone this time — more like here today, here tomorrow. "Oh, no. I think I'm done (changing jobs)," says Walden, 49, who is settled in, and at peace, in his assistant superintendent position at The Ranch Club. "This will last me. I can't think of anything better to do." Walden's career journey includes building mandolins for Gibson, a renowned guitar manufacturer; assistant administrator for a computer company; and a crew member in the oil industry, which came with extreme hazards. "We blew up things under- ground. It was awesome," he says. The hours? Not so great (100 hours weekly). Neither was the peril (8,000 pounds per square inch of pressure in pipes. If you turned the wrong valve, it could be extremely dangerous, even deadly). Walden decided to move to Montana, saw a newspaper ad for a golf course, and sealed his future. "I was cutting cups the first day. Mowed greens, too. I enjoy what I do, and I get to do it outside. Best of both worlds," says Walden, a two-year GCSAA member, who also has a computer science degree from Montana State University.
