52 GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT 02.17 N a t u r l s e l e c t i o n s A Sunshine State standout making major strides toward sustainability. A Midwest course marked by diverse microclimates. A picturesque Pacific Northwest resort perched along rugged, windy coastline. A facility set on a former military training site in the Far East. When it comes to creating vibrant, environmentally responsible golf courses, the 2016 winners of the Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards show there's no setting too challenging, no goal too lofty and no initiative too small. The awards — presented annually by GCSA A and Golf Digest, in partnership with Syngenta and Rain Bird's Golf Division — recognize golf course superintendents and their courses for overall course management excellence and best management practices in the areas of water conservation, water quality management, integrated pest management, energy conservation, pollution prevention, waste management, wildlife and habitat conservation, communication and outreach, and leadership. Here, the year's top honorees share their stories, strategies, and points of greatest pride as environmental stewards. Megan Hirt
