Mr. Metcalf, a 33-year member of GCSAA, served his country in Vietnam before earning a bachelor's degree in plant and soil science from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1976. He became a golf course superintendent in 1982 at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla., overseeing the Copperhead Course. He hosted two Florida Opens and four U.S. Junior Championships. In 1986, he moved to Dunedin Country Club in Dunedin, Fla., to oversee course operations. One year later, he moved his family to Naples, Fla., to oversee construction of Vineyards Golf Club. During 10 years there, he hosted five Senior PGA tournaments. In 1996, he earned Certified Golf Course Superinten- dent status. He concluded his career as superintendent at Wyndermere Country Club in 2014 in Naples and transitioned into semi-retirement as general grounds manager at Grey Oaks Country Club, then at Quail West Golf and Country Club, both in Naples, until late 2016. Mr. Metcalf, an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pat Metcalf; son, Jesse (Jac- quelyn) Metcalf; daughter, Alecia Metcalf; granddaughter, Elizabeth Metcalf; brother, Michael Metcalf; sisters, Susan Valdez and Theresa (Wallace) Catanach; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bill (Cindy) Leonard and Mary (Peter) Zagaeski, Cecilia Greenbaum, Martin (Diana) Leonard, Kathleen (Tim) White, John Cooney, Peter (Vicki) Leonard and Sean Leonard; and many nieces and nephews. Edward "Butch" Pondo Sr., 80, died Sept. 6, 2018. Mr. Pondo, a 50-year member of GCSAA, launched his career in the industry at Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa. He worked for his uncle, John Trullinger, who was the superintendent. Both of them left there and went to Center Square Golf Club in Norristown, Pa., again with Pondo as the assistant and Trullinger as the superintendent. Pondo went on to spend nearly 36 years, first as the assistant and later the superintendent, at Plymouth Country Club in Plymouth Meet- ing, Pa. His son, Edward Jr., served as his assistant there. Mr. Pondo is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Edward Pondo Jr. and David (Jennifer) Pondo; daughter, Kim, and her husband, Joe; grandchildren, Joseph and Connor; sisters, Joan, and her husband, Matthew, and Carol; nieces, Joanie and Christine; nephews, two of them named Matthew, Mark and Brandon; and great-niece, Nicole.
