98 GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT 04.19 Q: What is your favorite piece of equipment? A: Our John Deere utility tractor. Or any tractor. We were talking about this the other day because it is used for so many tasks during the summer and winter. We use it for aeration, hauling material, unloading supplies, mowing, verticutting, plowing snow, blowing snow, etc. Oh yeah … it also has a stereo in it. Q: The best song of all time is …? A: Hey, come on … there is no answer to that one, and I love all music, but I can tell you a song I never hit the skip button on: "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" by Cannonball Adderley. It's about adversity, which we have to deal with every day, right? Q: What is your favorite word and why? A: "Hello." It usually makes people smile and seems to be a very good conversation starter. — Howard Richman, GCM associate editor Getting to know you Kevin Abila was drawn to the town of Crested Butte for the snowboarding and never left. He met his wife, Crissy, there and made a home — they now have children Norah and Jonah. Abila also must feel right at home at The Club at Crested Butte, where he has been employed since 1996. After serving on the crew in multiple roles, such as a laborer, irrigation technician and assistant super- intendent, Abila recently took the ultimate step: He was named superintendent for the first time in his career, after Steve Rau retired. "I was happy," says Abila, a 13-year GCSAA member who credits Rau for his guidance. "He gave me freedom to learn. All the opportunities he threw me into helped me learn." Abila enhanced his industry knowledge by securing a certificate in turfgrass manage- ment from Rutgers University. One thing he for sure knows is that his club offers quite a challenge, including ice damage on greens. "We're at 9,000 feet (above sea level) in the Rockies and one of the coldest valleys in the Lower 48. We have weeks of winter weather when it's 20, 30 or 40 below zero (and Crested Butte averages more than 200 inches of snow annually), and in June and July we can have frost damage. We can be 30 (degrees) in the morning and 80 by afternoon," he says. Kevin Abila Was: Assistant superintendent, The Club at Crested Butte (Colo.)
