88 GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT 02.19 Q: Your favorite word is … ? A: "Efficiency." I think that is any superintendent's favorite word when it comes to work. Q: Being a new superintendent, what was the best piece of advice that prepared you for this job? A: I have a few things that pop into my head when I think about this question. The first one was instilled in my brain from a young age, and that is hard work will always pay off. It will also help get you to the goals that you set for yourself. Q: What is your stress reliever? A: I started playing guitar a few years ago. A close friend who passed away, Chris Deardorff, was a fantastic musician. His loss really hurt me. I started playing after he passed because it made me feel close to him, like he's almost sitting there with me. — Howard Richman, GCM associate editor Getting to know you School days? It was more like school daze for a young Mike Adkins. "I wanted to be a kid when I was in high school. I wanted to be outside," Adkins says. With age comes a new and improved version of Adkins in the classroom. Proof: He recorded a 3.25 grade-point average on a 4-point scale his last semester to earn an associate degree in turfgrass science and management from Penn State's online program. "I take a lot of pride in my GPA," says Adkins, 40, a five-year GCSAA member who thanks Penn State instructors Peter Landschoot, Ph.D., and Ben McGraw, Ph.D., for their guidance, and also thanks his girlfriend, Veronica Ukastine, for her love and support. "The more well-rounded you are, the better you are, especially in this industry." A native of Lewisberry, Pa., Adkins was assistant superintendent at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif., before coming to Twin Warriors. Recently, a Colorado superintendent was chatting about soil pH and water quality with Adkins, who is challenged by both factors at his course. He's also pursuing a bachelor's degree in turfgrass from Penn State, another signal that he is committed to his profession — and ongoing learning. "When I first applied to go to Penn State, they called me to make sure I was serious," Adkins says. "I'm striving to be better, I want to learn more, and I've learned to lean on others because you can't do everything by yourself in this business."
